4th of July Roundup

As I mentioned last year, the 4th of July also happens to be my seester's birthday. So growing up the fourth never really focused on anything but her birthday. We always said that people were setting of fireworks in HER honor (pretty sure she still believes that, haha). On our birthdays we were always allowed to pick our birthday dinner, so there were usually no fancy tri-colored foods or desserts.
Although I can remember my mom making a cake one year (or maybe several years) that had the berry American flag decorated on top. You know, the one that seemed like Woman's Day, Good Housekeeping, and Better Homes and Gardens had on every July cover during the 90's?

Anyways, because we were always celebrating a birthday on the 4th, it was a family affair. We didn't have huge barbeques with the neighbors or with friends. And with five kids, it as pretty rare that my parents hauled us down to the riverfront to watch the fireworks. We just blew up our own at home. A simple, understated, and relaxed kind of a day.
